Forests take up carbon dioxide via photosynthesis. In the absence of forest management, carbon returns to the atmosphere via respiration, decomposition, or combustion. When carbon is transferred into the forest products sector, it can offset greenhouse gas emissions and/or increase carbon storage. Biomass combusted for bioenergy production can reduce reliance on fossil fuel energy.
