Description
Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) protects plant health through rigorous regulation of genetically engineered (GE) organisms. This program provides information to Native American communities about field tests and petitions (requests) for non-regulated status of genetically GE organisms that may impact them. Engage Native American communities on how these GE products may affect them, their culture, and their lands.
Eligibility
Open to all.
Climate Change Component
Biotechnology Regulatory Service (BRS) implements the APHIS regulations for genetically engineered (GE) organisms that may pose a risk to plant health. APHIS coordinates these responsibilities along with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration as part of the Federal Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology. While no BRS actions are directly “vulnerable” to climate change, they may shift geographically if climate change affects the distribution of agricultural crops and other plants that BRS regulates. For example, if growing areas for regulated GE plants shift, BRS would need to conduct field inspections in those new locations.
