WESTI Ag Days: Worland, WY

The 2018 WESTI Ag Days in Worland, WY will begin Wednesday, February 14. Keynote speaker, Trent Loos, will kick-off the two-day event talking about bridging the gap between rural producers and urban consumers. The following are additional highlights of this year's program:

  • Sarah Lungren, South Flat Land and Livestock
    • will share about her work communicating with consumers about GMOs in the sugar industry
  • Jeremiah Vardiman, University of Wyoming Extension
    • will provide an update on the alfalfa weevil control, and the impacts of spray speed application
  • Caitlin Youngquist and John Hewlett, University of Wyoming Extension
    • will highlight potential alternative crops that might fit into local cropping systems, and tools for assessing profitability and risk of new crops
  • Bill Stump, University of Wyoming Extension
    • will provide an update about a new corn bacterial disease in Nebraska and Colorado, potential impacts, and how to recognize and manage it
  • USDA NRCS and USDA FSA Staff
    • will share about current programs including the Livestock Disaster Programs, Non-Insured Crop Programs, Farm Loan Programs, Incentive Grant Programs
  • Windy Kelley, USDA Northern Plains Climate Hub and University of Wyoming Extension
    • will introduce participants to several resources and tips for getting the most out of on-line weather, climate, and drought tools to make more informed decisions
  • Gary White of Allied Seed and Caitlin Youngquist, University of Wyoming Extension
    • will discuss current cover crop research projects including trap crops and grazing mixes. Cover crop selection resources will also be highlighted

The following youth activites are also planned:

  • Ten Sleep FFA will perform their Ag Issues skit in preparation for an upcoming competition
  • Worland FFA agriculture science projects will be on display
  • Ag Career Evening
    • Youth and their parents are invited to interact with professionals to discuss career and college options such as:
      • animal science, education, engineering, welding, and agronomy
