Coping with Extreme Heat in California

Over the last decade, California experienced several record heat days and climate change is projected to increase the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events across the state. With compounding climate stressors such as drought, it is important to monitor, prepare for, respond, and recover from extreme heat events.

NOTE: If you know of any extreme heat resources relevant to California’s natural and working lands that are not on this list, please contact the California Climate Hub Science Communication Specialist, Amelia Oxarart.

  • Extreme Heat Days & Warm Nights Calculator

This is a CalAdapt tool that calculates the projected changes in the number of extreme heat days and, separately, the number of warm nights per year under two emissions scenarios in a specific location.

    The Climate Explorer

As a part of the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, this tool demonstrates how climate conditions, including extreme heat, are projected to change over the coming decades

    California Heat Assessment Tool (CHAT)

Originally developed as part of the state's Fourth Climate change Assessment, this tool helps users understand how heat vulnerability will change with increasing temperatures. The tool also includes vulnerability indicators such as social, health and environmental to help facilitate adaptive decision making.

  • Preparing California for Extreme Heat

This is a guide created by the California Climate Action Team, this report provides guidance and recommendations to help Californians prepare for extreme heat events.
